Pockets are the origin of bags

The origins of bags and handbags were pockets and pouches kept under the clothes by men and women in fashion and costume history.

In the late seventeenth-century and most of the eighteenth-century, pockets were separate items from skirts. Women skirts and men blouse were hiding capacious pockets amongst the fabrics and folds. These pockets were functional, roomy and beautiful purses for personal use not seen by strangers except when they were stolen by an expert thief. The pockets or zip pouches were containing all the essentials of daily life such as money, keys, cosmetics and perfume.
